Prof Maria A. Fiatarone Singh AM, MD, FGSA, FRACP, a board-certified geriatrician in the USA and Australia, has held the inaugural John Sutton Chair of Exercise and Sport Science, Faculty of Medicine and Health, and Professorship, Sydney Medical School since 1999. Her research, teaching and clinical career has focused on the integration of geriatric medicine, exercise, and nutrition to improve quality of life in older adults, and she is recognised internationally for this work spanning 4 decades. She has designed and carried out many clinical trials and longitudinal studies internationally, including large multi-centre trials of exercise and chronic disease management. She has published extensively, having authored/edited 3 books and over 450 peer-reviewed journal articles, including Global Consensus guidelines on physical activity and ageing, as well as ESSA and ACSM position stands on resistance training, ageing, osteoporosis, and diabetes. She has been awarded research funding exceeding AUD $93 million to date and Membership in the Order of Australia for her contributions to Geriatric Medicine in 2022. Her clinical practice and dissemination work is carried out via the Centre for Strong Medicine and the Fit for Your Life Foundation, as well as numerous clinical facilities globally which have adopted her training principles.
